Animals are often used in school settings for a variety of purposes. In some cases, they provide hands-on demonstrations of scientific concepts covered in the classroom, while other times their purposes are to support students who have deficits in mobility, vision, hearing, or those with other health impairments (e.g., epilepsy or cerebral palsy). There are several categories in which animals in schools can be classified. These include service animals, support animals, and therapy animals, to name a few. This document serves to clarify the various roles of these animals and discuss the legal parameters that surround each category.
